Your Brush Roll Is a important part of your cleaning system in fact agitation is around 35 to 40% of your vacuum cleaning performance. If you ever broke a belt on your vacuum you will have probably notice you can go over and over a piece of fuzz and nothing happens its still there. I think we all been there and done that simply replace the belt and your good to go, but a lot of times we will get customers in are vacuum repair shop saying their Kirby vacuum not picking up very well and in most cases the belt has stretched out and not getting proper tension on the brush the brush is spinning when you check it but when the brush roll comes in contact with the carpet the belt slips on the brush and motor shaft. Just from normal use all vacuum stretch belts like kirby will ware and slip causing the belt to lose its elasticity
from the friction and heat this produces. It is recommended to change your belt every 3 to 6 months depending on often you vacuum. This is a cheap and easy fix for keeping your vacuum performing at top performance. keeping a few extra belts on hand will help from getting frustrated when this happens.

Now that we have looked at how the brush roll and belt system works together lets focus more on the brush roll itself . Looking for signs of ware and when it time to replace the brush roll .. The first thing I look at after taking the brush out that comes into my shop is the belt then the brush roll itself making sure the very ends of the brush called bushing or on the later model bearing end caps making sure the spin easily
and freely they should turn easily and not feel any resistance, if you do feel resistance this could cause
faster than normal belt warring or breaking. most of the time this resistance is cause from carpet fibers hair and dirt getting under the end caps get wrap up with the brush bearings on the later model machine
generation models and up the end caps can be pulled off to clean the dirt and hair around the bearing
sometime this work sometime not if after cleaning if the bearing still does not spin without resistance
the brush will have to be replace. about the only other common wear would be the brushes unplug the machine and turn on to its side the brushes should be out slightly past the chrome metal bottom plate
as the brush spins around if not time to replace
